not evaporating

try not to sink
don’t even leave footprints
in the Hall of Ex-Sweethearts
in the course of a day
thoughts flung around
after a cloudburst of singing
songbird, birdsong
even so
there should be snow:
on drumheads in attics
I would hug you more than I did
if I could do some of these things again
we’d share cardigans
and bang on pots and pans
to scare bad bears away
there should be snow:
there should be snow
in most of what we do
mixed in with our body-heat
and softening our landscapes
keeping steady time
the spiral winds up, too
the spirit warms up, too
there should be snow:
out there on the tundra
blissed-out and hungry
gold leaf on ribbon-mic trees
humming through the jungle
night is a verb in this place
to fall to sleep
and sleep by the light of the afterglow
there should be snow
I miss him
but I’m mostly used to it
but sometimes the absurdity hits
of that garbage year’s hurts
and makes it hard to catch my breath
what comes unbidden
in the sweet things hidden
leaves me hollow
never haunted
and close to tears again
I would hug you more than I did
if I could do some of these things again
from now, as always
I’ll hold on the best I can
through the terror summers
until winter’s endless comes
