first was Dad’s chest
rising and falling
as he napped
and i fell asleep
second, it came in a dream
and like every endless body
of water
or space
or time
i was little and scared
until i was safe on land
awake again
third sprung forth
fully formed and basically unnavigable
from barely-understood chords
strummed clumsily on an electric guitar
and barely-contained late breaths
city-lit in a foreign room
in deep july
and blooms of ink on paper
for twenty-five years
songs flung out
into big big water
don’t you think the whales are pretty?
they’re not scared or anxious or alone
don’t you think the dolphins are cool?
i wish i could do this so effortlessly
leap once in a while before i
fourth time in approach, pulled us across the humid land
for two days and a week and a year
the sun swallowed by the mountains behind us
i cried
and thought about the words “surf” and “surfer”
and the night kept rolling
it never ran out
we never got full
big happiness washing over us
the last was the first time
as simple as that
the first time as far as i’m concerned
every single step for months on end
was a step on that shore
and i wasn’t scared
rising and falling
and i’d do it all again

(it’s been raining for two days
and my neck hurt when i woke up
and time is muddy but moving too fast
too many things are both things at once
and it’s been hard to focus lately)
