lyrics

i want to go down to speak in tongues
to spend some time in that room
i want to stay a while on water that’s always high
i want to find the way back in
to walk all night long again
fall asleep on the floor where the light passes through trembling leaves
before it hits the window

to wake in the morning of our quiet guitars
i’ll write it all down on hundreds of pages
make every effort to contain the flood
a glacier decades in the making

carve a way into or out of some storm
live in between the loud parts
in the room with seasonal blue moon wallpaper
i don’t think there can be any change
to how some of this feels
it’s forever, it’s candlelight, it’s gone
what’s the difference between not going back
and never leaving?
and what will become painfully clear when now is no longer now?

in the room where carousel animals sleep in groups on the floor
and a hand-crank there turns the clouds and christmas lights
in that unsteady, perfect motion
paint me a river between before and after
